Workforce Certificate

This program prepares students for certification and initial employment as paramedic in the state of Florida. The program follows the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for Paramedic and Florida Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks for Paramedic.  The course is divided into three sections or phases with several courses per phase.  The final phase has an additional course for the student to ride on an ALS permitted ambulance. At the completion of the program.  The student will receive a workforce certificate and will meet the prerequisites for the Florida Paramedic certification examination.

A Selective Admission Program

This program prepare student to advance in their scope of practice as an out of hospital provider of emergency medical care.  The program is intended for the Florida certified EMT who is employed by a public service agency or health care provider.  The Medical Director and/or the Program Director select all students.

Career Opportunities/Rapid Placement

Immediately after passing the state of Florida Paramedic Exam, the student will be eligible to advance in their department.

Certification

Successful completion of this program will allow the student to test to be a certified Paramedic in the state of Florida.  The test is administered by the state of Florida Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Service via the Medical Quality Assurance Board.

Application Procedure

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a major criterion in a student’s completion of the program. Students who fail to meet the State of Florida’s designated exit score will be required to complete the Vocational Preparatory Instruction (VPI). In order to complete the program successfully, students must achieve or surpass the designated exit score(s). See the Standards of Academic Progress. 

Paramedic Program is a selective access program.  All needed instructions and documents will be provided during the admission process.

To meet the minimum requirements for consideration for acceptance into the program, applicants must complete the following as instructed during the admission process:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Provide a copy of high school diploma or equivalency degree
  3. Provide a copy of a current Florida EMT Certification
  4. Provide a copy of a current AHA Health Care provider CPR card (front and back)
  5. Provide a copy of a current Driver’s License
  6. Provide a copy of current health insurance coverage
  7. Submit to a criminal background check- national
  8. Submit to a drug screen test
  9. Submit to a physical examination
  10. Provide proof of immunizations (Rubella, German Measles, Mumps, Varcella, H1N1 Virus, Hepatitis B, TB)
  11. Submit TABE, CPT, SAT or ACT scores
  12. Approval by the Medical Director and/or Program Director

Record of Conviction of a Crime


Effective July 1, 2009, pursuant to Section 456.0635, Florida Statutes, health care review boards shall refuse to renew a license, certificate or registration, issue a license, certificate or registration and shall refuse to admit a candidate for examination if the applicant has been convicted or plead guilty or nolo contendre, regardless of adjudication, to a felony violation of: chapters 409, 817, or 893, Florida Statutes; or 21 U.S.C. ss. 801-970 or 42 U.S.C. ss. 1395-1396, unless the sentence and any probation or pleas ended more than 15 years prior to the application, terminated for cause from Florida Medicaid Program (unless the applicant has been in good standing for the most recent 5 years) or terminated for cause by any other State Medicaid Program or the Medicare Program (unless the termination was at least 20 years prior to the date of the application and the applicant has been in good standing with the program for the most recent 5 years). The Florida nursing or allied health licensure or certification application requires disclosure of any criminal history and the disposition of all cases prior to board review. Being convicted of, or having entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendre to, any of the listed felonies in Florida Statute 456.0635 or termination for cause from the statutorily-described Medicaid programs will preclude an applicant from obtaining a nursing or allied health license or certification in the state of Florida. Entry and acceptance into the nursing or allied health program does not guarantee licensure or certification in the State of Florida.
